South Africa 1979
Larry and Eleanor Miles with Keith van Heerden and his wife Hilde. Miles went down to the 7,000 foot level below surface in a gold mine and climbed up into a working face where jackhammers were drilling. He visited the DeBeers diamond sorting house in Kimberley to see the real McCoy. Larry never missed a trick, from the conference in Pretoria, to the Middleburg steel and Alloys Plant on the way to the Kruer National Park, where from his Kombi the party was able to see an elephant pushing down a sizable tree.

With Keith van Heerden "down home" in South Africa 1979. During his tour he was introduced to a quart bottle of beer on arrival on a hot day on the Natal sugar farm.

The U.S. Air Force Museum Dayton, Ohio - April 1984.
Ted Fowler and his wife took Larry and Eleanor to the museum and Larry spotted something in a wall niche. He called out to Eleanor, "This is it!" He explained that the item in the niche was the turbo-super charger for the B-17 and P-47, the one he has always described as having been the trigger to his development of the concept of Function Analysis. He had not seen one since the early 1940's and was quite thrilled.
